Further Cuts at Minor Hotels

Minor International has indicated that it may cut more jobs and shut recently re-opened hotels amidst the Covid-19 pandemic and travel restrictions globally. Minor operates some of the leading brands in the industry including Anantara, Avani, The Oaks, NH Hotels, Tivoli Hotels & Resorts, with 526 hotels under its umbrella.

According to Chairman and Founder Bill Heinecke, Thailand’s reluctance to open its borders makes it one of the most difficult markets for Minor. Heinecke expects China, to be the important factor in shaping Thailand’s economic recovery. Some 83% of Minor’s hotels remain operational currently.

In Malaysia, Minor Hotel Group operates Anantara Desaru Coast Resort & Villas in Johor’s east coast and AVANI Sepang Gold Coast Resort in Selangor. In August 2020, it launched Anantara Desaru Coast Residences in conjunction with its partner Themed Attractions Resorts & Hotels Sdn Bhd (40% owned by Khazanah Nasional Bhd). The project comprised some 20 luxury villas priced from RM7.5 million. Minor Hotel Group has recently expressed interest in developing a hotel in Kuala Lumpur and is targeting to open the 378 room AVANI Kota Kinabalu in 2021.
